Local riders crowned champs

The Runaways games team, with two members from Ridge Riders Pony Club and three members of the Running Fox Pony Club, who ride at Valley Crest Farm in Millbrook, took first place Saturday in the Prince Philip Cup. The equestrian competition was held in conjunction with the Kentucky Rolex Three Day Event in Lexington, Ky.

As the top junior team at the 2007 National Championships last July, the Runaways were invited to compete along with five other United States Pony Club junior games teams in this annual competition.

Prince Philip inaugurated the Cup challenge in 1985 to promote the advancement of mounted games in the United States. The Cup challenge has seen the best USPC junior teams vie for the honor of having their names inscribed on the silver cup during the past 23 years.
Members of the Runaways are:

• Sophie Ruff of Croton-on-Hudson, riding Good Golly Miss Molly
• Abby Cook of Poughkeepsie, riding Rebel
• Megan Griffin of Hyde Park, riding Parker
• Chelsea Efantes Poughkeepsie, riding Summit
• Sam Weintraub of Cortlandt Manor, riding Skip
The Runaways are coached by Lisa Winkler, owner of Valley Crest Farm. The team has been practicing and holding special training clinics during the past nine months to help them prepare for the competition.

Mounted games competition is a strenuous activity for both the rider and pony. The games are a series of relay races on horseback, where the riders must perform different skills while riding at speed. These activities test agility, balance and team cooperation. Competitors in this year’s Prince Philip Cup had to go through 30 different games before the final winner could be determined.
